Training Courses Translations into Khmer Books publishing

Untitled Document

Training courses.
Translation
of social science texts.

In the first stage, the training courses will not be centered on the acquisition of translation skills in a particular subject matter, but will be based on a general social science discourse corpus. The aim is to train competent translators from English and French into Khmer. The training course is made up of two modules:

  • A theoretical module. Far from being obvious, defining the notion of translation is a necessity: there are a number of books translated from English and French into Khmer which do not fit the requirements of what a translation should be. Basic notions such as homonymy, synonymy, antonymy and the question of definition will be defined and analyzed.
  • A practical module. It will be centered on the structural approach and the examination of selected texts, on the use of existing monolingual and bilingual dictionaries, and issues linked to the creation of new Khmer words.

By comparison with the other Southeast Asian languages, there is a striking lack of Khmer books in the various fields of the social sciences. Cambodian students do not have access to sources other than their courses.
One fundamental criterion of success for undergraduate university students lies in the possibility of using textbooks and books written in or translated into their mother tongue. That is the reason why the IDSSC has selected a number of English and French texts to be translated into the Khmer language.

The IDSSC intends to publish or republish introductory textbooks to various social sciences either written directly in Khmer or in bilingual version (Khmer-English, Khmer-French). Some of those textbooks and books will be available on-line on the Institute's website. Radio and television programs.

Without considering for the moment a complete introductory course to a specific field, this set of programs intends to highlight:

  • The notion of "social sciences".
  • The various ways to apply them in Cambodia .
  • The methodologies that characterize them.

Although those programs primarily concern university students, researchers and lecturers, they will nevertheless be prepared in a way that enables them to be understood by anyone without previous training.
